Frederick Anderson graduated from UTS and went on to train as an officer at the Royal Military College in Kingston, where he obtained a commission with the Royal Field Artillery. He went overseas in September 1917, arriving in France in January 1918 to join the Fifth British Army. His career was brief but eventful, for he participated in all the heavy fighting to repel the German offensive of March and April, and received the Military Cross for his service. He fell ill with pneumonia and died in Dunkirk Military Hospital in May. He was buried in the town cemetery, along with fellow UTS students Herbert Mackarsie Cumming and Cyril Roaf Barber.
